THE SAIL-TRAINING BOAT OF OFFSHORE SAILING SCHOOL

FT. MYERS, FL – The Colgate 26, an entry-level and performance sailboat, is known as America’s leading training vessel. More than 40 years of teaching experience and sailing school management went into the design of this sailboat and since its debut in 1996 it has become the definitive training boat for the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Maine Maritime Academy and United Kingdom Sailing Academy and forms the foundation of Offshore Sailing School’s Learn To Sail program. In 1997, it won the 1997 Cruising World magazine Boat of the Year Award in the Pocket Cruiser category.

Steve Colgate, Olympic sailor, America’s Cup competitor and founder of the Offshore Sailing School, teamed up with renowned navel architect Jim Taylor to create the Colgate 26. Colgate believed there was a need for a low cost, durable, safe instructional boat in the marketplace – one that wouldn’t scare beginners yet still challenge racers. The Colgate 26 fit that need to a tee.

The graceful Colgate 26 is equipped with innovative teaching aids and a unique blend of performance, comfort, safety and stability. In the security of its spacious, ergonomically designed cockpit, there is room to move around with plenty of comfortable seating, imparting the feel of a larger boat with features that make it safe and easy to handle. The Colgate 26 provides exceptional sailing performance in both light air and heavy winds. Foam-filled compartments in the hull make it virtually unsinkable and rigid stainless steel cockpit railings, something not found on other boats of this size, provide real security when moving around the boat.

“She feels and acts like a much larger boat,” says Colgate. Her 2600-pound weight renders a sturdy boat that maintains competitive speed. “After learning on a Colgate 26, sailors are prepared to go on to racing or comfortably make the transition to cruising boats,” continues Colgate, who notes its growing reputation as an affordable daysailer and weekender that can accommodate four to six adults.

Offshore Sailing School sells the Colgate 26 sailboat to schools and consumers, starting at $39,000 per boat with add-on accessories available as well. Interested sailors can inquire by calling (800) 221-4326.

Founded in 1964, the Offshore Sailing School has taught more than 100,000 men and women how to sail. Chosen as ‘Best of New York’ for sailing lessons by New York Magazine’s 2006 Best of New York issue and ranked #1 by Practical Sailor in both instructors and curriculum, Offshore is the only sailing school recognized by the American Council on Education for credit at the college level. Ten locations ensure accessible programs for all levels of instruction. The School operates year-round; locations include four in Florida (Captiva Island, St. Petersburg, Ft. Myers Beach and the Keys); Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Abaco, Bahamas; Liberty Landing Marina, NJ; Chelsea Piers, NYC; NY Maritime College at Ft. Schuyler and The Sagamore, Lake George, NY.
