Colgate 26 One-Design Fleet Forms at Nyack Boat Club
Nyack, NY (February 22, 2006) - The Nyack Boat Club recently announced the formation of a new one-design fleet of Colgate 26 sailboats. The fleet grew from one boat to five in the last two years. Current owners expect several others to be added in the coming season.
The Colgate 26 owners, who are also members of Fleet #2 of the Colgate 26 Class Association, are looking forward to performing the additional responsibilities of club fleets. “We thank the club for this opportunity for additional participation and increased visibility in our club’s operations,” said Randy Smith, fleet publicist.
“We have plans to expand a competitive racing program in our fleet,” noted fleet captain Alan Asarnow, skipper of #164 Downtime. “In the past two seasons, the Nyack Boat Club sent a Colgate 26 and crew to compete in the National Offshore One Design regatta during Marblehead Race Week. Given the active racing program at Nyack and the assistance of our volunteer coach Lou Carretero, we feel that we are able to offer stiff competition to other Colgate 26 sailors in regional races,” he said.
The Colgate fleet expects that one or two boats will visit from Marblehead for the Nyack Boat Club’s annual Memorial Day regatta. Also expected are two Colgates from the Jersey City branch of Offshore Sailing School that participated in this regatta during the past two years. Nyack’s regatta will be held on May 27 and 28, 2006.
Colgate owners are seeking crew for the racing program. The Nyack Boat Club holds two-day holiday regattas for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day every year. These hugely popular events host a half dozen fleets and provide as much entertainment for the motorists stuck in holiday traffic on the Tappan Zee Bridge as they do for the sailors. The club also conducts an active Sunday afternoon racing program all season and a Wednesday night series of races that have over twenty boats of all sizes and classes enjoying a mid-week break.
