FLEET 1 Information
Location:
Fleet #1 sails out of Marblehead/Salem Sound, MA.
Where is Salem Sound you ask?
Salem Sound includes Beverly, Salem and Marblehead, MA.
For those not familiar with the Massachusetts coast, we are about 20 miles north of Boston in the area between Gloucester (Perfect Storm locale) and Marblehead. Marblehead being 1 of the 2 sailing centers in New England, the other being Newport, RI. This is also the home of Doyle Sails, Jim Taylor, the Colgate 26 designer and the Witch City, Salem, MA famous for the witch trials of long ago.
About the fleet:
We have 3 boats that raced PHRF this year, 2002, and should have 5 for next year.
Our ratings are:
162 racing and 168 cruising with the 100% jib
156 racing and 162 cruising with the 150% genoa
We will all probably all be using the 162 rating next year with hopes of having enough boats by 2004 to have our own one design fleet. Racing is sponsored on Wednesday nights by the Boston Yacht Club out of Marblehead and on Thursday nights by the Jubilee Yacht Club from Beverly. There are races just about every weekend and some frostbiting series for the hardcore.
Doyle One Design in Marblehead has been working with some of our fleet and Jim Taylor to come up with a one design set of sails. The design seems to be coming along. In the 2002 PHRF New England Races in a fleet of 12 boats, 2 of the 3 Colgates came in 1st and 3rd for the weekend.
Fleet #2 information
Location:
C26 Fleet #2 is based in a beautiful, broad area of the Hudson River known as the Tappan Zee. Located just North of the Tappan Zee Bridge, it connects Westchester and Rockland Counties in New York.
About the fleet:
We are approximately 20 miles north of Mid-town Manhattan and draw participation from the entire Metropolitan area. Our newly formed fleet has fourC26’s at its core. We are members of Nyack Boat Club and race mostly one-design with occasional efforts in PHRF and Portsmouth Handicap races. Our PHRF rating here is 168 with 100% jib. (No one here is using a Genoa.) All four of our current boats have new Doyle class sails.
In 2004, we traveled with one boat to the NOOD Regatta in Marblehead, MA and this year we’re planning to take either two or three of our boats to that venue. We are also planning to participate in One-Design races with HRYRA (Hudson River Yacht Racing Ass’n) at various venues further North on the Hudson.
We anticipate as many as seven C26’s to participate in the annual Memorial Day Regatta at the Nyack Boat Club with two sailing up from the lower Hudson and one trailering down from Marblehead. We welcome all interested Colgate 26 sailors to participate with us.
